Also called internal abdominal oblique, IO.

Anatomy

Origin
Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior two-thirds of the iliac crest, lateral inguinal ligament region
Insertion
Inferior borders of ribs 10-12, linea alba and pecten pubis via the conjoint tendon
Nerve
Thoraco-abdominal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12) and first lumbar nerve (L1) (T7-L1)

Actions

  • Compresses the abdomen
  • Flexes the trunk
  • Unilaterally rotates the trunk to the same side and laterally flexes it
